UPMC Shadyside Hosts Annual Shoulder to Shoulder Benefit Concert Featuring Dr. Barry Coutinho

It was an evening of piano classics and Argentinian tangos featuring our very own Dr. Barry Coutinho on piano. He was joined by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s violinist Irene Cheng, and cellist Charlie Powers for an evening of beautiful music. The concert was performed before a live audience at the Herberman Conference Center at UPMC Shadyside. We were pleased to have as our special guest, WQED-FM’s Radio Host Jim Cunningham. He shared with the audience his great insight and knowledge on the history of these beautiful selections of work composed by Chopin, Liszt, Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel. All proceeds from this concert benefits Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh – San Jose which provides community-oriented primary care to the people of San Jose Del Negrito, Honduras.

As a teenager, Dr. Coutinho appeared in the final rounds of the United Kingdom’s BBC Young Musician of the Year National Music Competition and won several awards at the Guildhall School of Music in London. He was awarded the Associate Diploma with Honors from the London Royal College of Music and was later a double prize winner in both the 2011 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, and the 2013 Washington D.C. International Piano Artists competition.
