Austen Rankin, DO, MMS

  • First Year Resident

Are you in a special track or focus during your residency?

Not currently, but I have an interest in HIV care and adolescent medicine

Why did you choose UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program? Why Pittsburgh?

I chose UPMC Shadyside because of the genuine warmth and camaraderie I experienced among the faculty and residents during my interview. The program’s supportive and collaborative culture closely aligns with my personal and professional goals of becoming a well-rounded physician. The diversity of backgrounds and strong sense of community within the program were also important factors in my decision. Originally from the West Coast, I’ve grown to love the culture and vibrant communities that make Pittsburgh unique. Over the past five years, during my time as a medical student and now as a resident, I’ve built meaningful friendships and developed a strong connection to the city. As I continue to explore all that Pittsburgh has to offer, it has truly become home for me.

What are your goals while here in the residency program? How will this prepare you to be an excellent physician?

My primary goal is to fully engage in every learning opportunity throughout my rotations and develop a strong foundation in primary care, with a particular focus on HIV and adolescent medicine. I approach each rotation with a commitment to continuous improvement, seeking to advance my clinical skills while building meaningful relationships with my patients. I am confident that the training and mentorship offered by this program will provide me with the knowledge, experience, and resources needed to guide my patients toward healthier lives through comprehensive, compassionate care.

Do you have any special interests outside of the residency?

Outside of residency, I enjoy running and occasionally participate in 5Ks and half marathons. I also have a passion for growing plants and spending time outdoors. In addition, I love to travel and take every opportunity to immerse myself in the culture and history of the places I visit.
