Residents at the Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program receive comprehensive training in Women’s Health. During their first year, residents spend two weeks gaining competency in pelvic exams and basic gynecology. In their second year, they spend a month working directly with gynecologists and family physician attendings, developing skills in comprehensive gynecologic care, including options counseling, procedural competency, and exposure to operative gynecology and office consultations.
Gynecology teaching is integral to every resident’s office practice, offering numerous opportunities to learn well-woman care, family planning, contraceptive counseling, STI treatment, and management of common gynecologic problems. Residents will also learn routine office gynecologic procedures and have the chance to achieve competency in IUD and Nexplanon insertion, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy.
Didactic lectures, case presentations, precepting, workshops, and community outreach activities regularly address gynecology and general women’s health care. By the end of their training at UPMC Shadyside, residents are well-prepared to provide comprehensive gynecologic care for their female patients.
